Go Gaz go!

GOODBYES are often very hard to say and this week our goodbye to Gary was one of those times. Gary or Gaz as he is known to many has been helping us set up the Pump Rooms for over two years. He has also been a regular helper at our Quiet Day lunches and Training events.

I first met Gaz a few years ago as he came into The Well for prayer. I have his permission to tell you that his background is one of crime. He had been in and out of prison for years and as he told us, he had become “institutionalised”. As soon as he came out of prison he reoffended as he hated being outside and felt safer inside! But on one of these times in prison he became a Christian and Jesus moved into his life big time! He was able to find some great mentoring both in Wales and Coventry. So his journey of Light began. When we met him he was in his late 20’s. I discovered that he had never had a job. He told me that he had written to countless charities to offer to do volunteer work but no one replied. He put this down to the fact that he was honest about his past life of drink, drugs, crime and prison.

I was very touched by this, that no one would give him a chance. I shared with him that we were looking for a volunteer with muscles to help us set up each week in the Pump Rooms and would he like to help us. He was delighted at this opportunity. I said that if all worked out well I would be happy to be a Referee for him in the future. This happened when he applied to be the Caretaker at Leamington Baptist Church. To his delight and surprise he was appointed a little over a year ago. His first ever job! He has done a super job there as well as with us.

His heart is to tell others about God’s love. He has now got an incredible opportunity in Middlesbrough with the Daniel Challenge Team. He will be part of a Team who ministers to people living on the Street with no hope or faith.

Therefore it was with huge sadness we threw a goodbye party for him on Tuesday but great joy too as we know that God will greatly use him in this new ministry.

At the party Gary said to us all, “this is amazing! I have never finished anything in my life except a prison sentence!” We thank God for Him and look forward to hearing about his adventures in Middlesbrough, this verse springs to mind, “Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead. I press on towards the goal to win the prize for what God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus.” Phil 3:13-14. Go Gaz go!
